A recurring nightmare for many small business owners in East & Central Africa is that the Piracy Police will come knocking on your door. As soon as they ask to see your licenses, you know your goose is cooked. That’s simply because many small businesses in the region use 90% pirated software. The Web, The Technology & The Brand

I visited a couple of websites today that I had not looked at in a long time and very quickly learned a few lessons on how to use the web to build my brand.

The biggest lesson was from a fast moving consumer goods (fmcg) business that launched a new website last year. Their new website introduces a departure from the branding consistency they exhibit in their shop front due to the introduction of a new base color. Whereas the brand uses mustard and rusty red on the ground, they use black as their base color on the web. No where else does black play such a prominent part in the presentation of the brand. In addition, navigation of the website does not allow the visitor to truly experience the brand. It performs dismally in its attempt to capture the essence of the brand.
